Postdoc in Tomographic Microscopy for Biological and Medical Applications - DTU Physics
DTU
Join our interdisciplinary team developing state-of-the-art 3D X-ray microscopy for life science applications. ‘Seeing is believing’, therefore at the DTU 3D imaging center we explore the frontiers of micro- and nano-scale 3D X-ray imaging. Our next challenge is to advance nano-scale X-ray tomography for biomedical applications. The research will be conducted within a larger project and in an interdisciplinary team.
We are looking for an outstanding and motivated candidate to take up the challenge of designing, developing and applying advanced X-ray imaging methods by combining experimental and computational approaches in physics. You will be working with laboratory X-ray microscopes at DTU and at synchrotron beamlines, in close collaboration with partners from the medical and biological domain.
Responsibilities and qualifications Your mission is to tackle current challenges in 3D X-ray imaging of low contrasted biological samples. Among the main tasks will be to demonstrate phase contrast micron and sub-micron resolution 3D images of clinically relevant tissue samples using laboratory- and synchrotron-based X-ray tomographic scanners.
For this it will be necessary to pursue the development of an X-ray phase contrast optimized imaging concept and demonstrate the benefits compared to existing analytical tools used in clinical practice and biology laboratories.
The potential to teach, advise Bachelor/Master student thesis projects, or be involved in proposal writing is also available to those that are interested in further developing their careers in any of those directions.
Our approach is highly collaborative within and outside DTU. You are therefore expected to have substantial collaborative interactions with other physicists, but experts from the medical and biological domain.
Qualifications As a formal qualification, you must hold a PhD degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics or similar.
You have solid physics and mathematics background and is excited about experimental science and advanced data analysis. We expect that you enjoy being part of a team, that you have sense of humour, is a good problem solver and that you can work efficiently and independently.
For this position we favour candidates with previous experience in X-ray imaging preferably for biomedical applications.
You should: Have a solid understanding of microscopy, electromagnetism/optics and linear algebra Be skilled in data analysis with proven experience with programming in Python Be skilled in experimental work We offer DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.
Salary and terms of employment The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. In addition, supplements can be negotiated in accordance with DTU’s salary structure for scientific staff: www.inside.dtu.dk/en/human-resources/during-employment/salary/salary-structures.
The period of employment is 2 years.

Application procedure Your complete online application must be submitted no later than 1 December 2026 (23:59 Danish time). Applications must be submitted as one PDF file containing all materials to be given consideration. To apply, please open the link "Apply now", fill out the online application form, and attach all your materials in English in one PDF file. The file must include: Application (cover letter) CV Academic Diplomas (MSc/PhD – in English) List of publications Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
All interested candidates irrespective of age, gender, disability, race, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply. As DTU works with research in critical technology, which is subject to special rules for security and export control, open-source background checks may be conducted on qualified candidates for the position.
4DMAP - Materials Physics in Time and Space at DTU Physics Materials Physics in Time and Space 4DMAP exploits leading expertise in x-ray and neutron science to gain unique insights in hard, soft and biological materials across time and length scales. Advanced measurements and simulation are performed both in-house and at international facilities, e.g. synchrotrons and free-electron lasers.
